Buying a home in a Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago is a great way to expose your family to the cultural heritage they’ll treasure for a lifetime. Here are a few things to consider when you’re looking for a new home in the Windy City.
Is it safe? – Like any big city, Chicago has areas that are better off left alone. If you’re able to find a great deal in a questionable area think about looking into Chicago Security Systems or even getting a dog to make you feel better.
Are the schools good? – Think about what public school options are available in your area and if you can afford to go private, how far are the schools? Your kids’ educational goals should be a priority as your job could change at the drop of a hat.
How’s the community? – The best way to get a feel for a neighborhood is to check it out at different times of day. Head over on a Saturday afternoon as well as a Tuesday night – think about the ways you can soak up the vibe before you buy!

Pilsen is a culturally diverse suburb of Chicago, located in the Lower West Side community of residential neighborhoods. In the 1800s, this area was originally settled by Czech, German and Irish immigrants, coming to America in search of new jobs and better lives for their families. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that a growing number of Hispanic citizens, originating mostly from Mexico, also began to settle in this quaint Chicago Suburb. Since then, there has been serious industrial and retail growth, spurring the creation of new jobs and better pay for Mexican-Americans and other cultures alike.

There are several great neighborhoods located in the heart of Pilsen. The ’18th street’ community is full of Mexican shops and bakeries, offering citizens a variety of places to shop and ample entertainment. In addition to being one of Pilsen’s preferred downtown neighborhoods, it is also a central point of commerce. The cuisine offered in many of 18th street restaurants is known by residents to be some of the most authentic Mexican cuisine in the country.

Development efforts in the northern section of Pilsen have been on the rise over the last several years, creating new and inviting communities for citizens to live. Also worth mentioning in the northern district of Pilsen are the beautifully executed restoration efforts on the historic, 800 unit ‘South Water Market.’

Wherever your family chooses to settle in Pilsen, there are many pleasant neighborhoods to choose from. Whether you prefer the bustling downtown action of 18th street, or a more relaxed suburb, you are sure to find a home in an area you will fall in love with.

The National Museum of Mexican Art (formerly known as the Mexican Fine Arts Museum) is the premier museum featuring Mexican art in the nation. The NMMA houses over 6000 artifacts in its permanent collection, including pieces from Mexico and Mexican-American artists. There is also always a variety of temporary exhibitions. The NMMA also collaborates with a local radio station, Radio Arte and has an art outreach program, Yollocalli.

Visiting and touring the National Museum of Mexican Art is easy. The NMMA is located near a train stop, the Damen Pink Line, as well as several buses. Admission is free, but donations are requested for larger tour groups. Tours and educational programs are available for all ages. The exhibitions are all on one floor of the museum. The permanent collection is organized into pre-Cuauhtmoc artifacts, textiles, folk art, paintings and drawings, sculptures, Epherma and photography. Despite the extensive collection, it is possible to view the entire museum within just a couple hours. The NMMA also features a gift store with many Mexican themed items.

For over two decades, the NMMA has shared Mexican culture with Chicago and the nation. There is no finer museum dedicated to Mexico’s past, present and future.

Elote was traditionally served by Mexican street vendors, but it quickly spread around the world. Whether you enjoy your elote in the traditional way off a stick or with the kernels cut up into a bowl, you do not have to look any further than the Chicago neighborhood of Pilsen. This neighborhood is located directly in the center of this large city and is referred to as many as the “heart of Chicago”. A few main streets that run through this area are by far the best locations to find elote and similar delicious fare. On W 18th Street and W Cermack Road you will find many unique street vendors and various restaurants that sell this yummy treat. Many of these restaurants and street vendors have Mexican names to go along with their authentic Mexican cuisine. There is much debate as to exactly which vendor sells the best elote in town, but if you would like to find out then simply walk along these two streets and sample elote from the more than ten street vendors along this route. If you go on a day when there is a farmer’s market then you are in luck because elote is everywhere!

Visiting Chicago is a fun and exciting experience. There are numerous places to shop, and many museums to visit. One of the best things about this town is visiting Humboldt Park. This park is full of all sorts of beauty. There are playgrounds, fields, lagoons, and it’s a great place to look at custom cars and cruisers from the local people. The eating at Humboldt park is on of the main attractions. There are numerous food vendors on site selling all sorts of tasty food.

One popular food item is the elote. The elote is corn on the cob that is roasted, and topped with plenty of butter or mayonaise, it is then sprinkled with cheese and hot pepper. Elotes can be found all over the Chicago area and sold by street vendors. This delightful food is a must to eat while at Humboldt Park. The best elote vendors in humboldt park are those that have fresh hot corn, and have the butter or mayo chilled so that it stays fresh. Some use lime juice on top, or put cilatro on it. They are put on sticks or served in small containers. These are delicious to eat while walking around the park and checking out the scenery. Make sure to try one during a visit to Chicago.
